I want to take up rifle shooting as a sport. I'm not a gangster and don't plan on shooting anything other than metal targets. How do I go about getting a licence to buy/own/use a small caliber rifle?

Thanks

Your best bet would be to check in your area for the nearest rifle range and shooting club. I've never been interested in that sort of thing so I've never looked into it but I would imagine that having somewhere to legaly shoot would be a condition of licence. Any way a local club would be able to set you up with all the info you need and possibly arrange some trial shoots for you before you go into the expense of getting a licence and buying a rifle. You probably find that you would also have to undergo extensive legal checks given the climate regarding firearms today
o to your local police station to pick up an application form for a Firearms Certificate.
Included will be a lot of information on storage of weapons and limitations to use.

The process involves a lot of checks by the police and the process can take up to 6 months or more , depending where you are.

Also, speak to a local gun dealer to say what it is you want to do, and he will give you information on the type of weapn to apply for and what is most suitable for your purposes. He will also be able to give you advice on security measures needed.
As pointed out above a shooting range would be the best place to start.
There wil be very exstensive checks on you and regualr checks all the time by the police.
The guy across the road from us owns guns because he goes pheasent shooting in the winter.
Not my idea of fun but there u go.
He gets checked regualrly by the local police concerning the storage of his guns.
Heaven help u if they get nicked.
One of his went missing when he moved in 5 years ago. It had been missed laid in the move but was found some time later in with another van full of stuff but by that time he had reprted it missing and it took him ages to get permission to keep them on his premisses again.

i suggest you go to where all the black gangsters hang out in london. Go dressed up as a giant ******* and offer to swap a few ounces of weed for a shooter. In no time u will find success. Hope this helps

You can obtain a licence for a rifle such as .22 smallbore cartridge rifle but you will only be licenced for specific purposes.
For target shooting you would be licenced to shoot at Home Office approved ranges only. For that you would need to join a rifle club and have been a member and shot regularly for 6 months before being granted your own licence.
The checks you undergo will be extensive police records check, a check with your GP and with 2 referees. The police actually ring your referees and question them closely.
To find out about rifle clubs see http://nsra.co.uk

You can obtain a licence for hunting purposes and for that you would need to ensure that you have the owners permission to shoot on land suitable for the calibre of rifle.

Alternatively you could buy an air rifle which does not require a licence as long as it's power is below 12 ft/lbs.
Law changes last year mean that air rifles that are purchased have to be collected from a licenced firearms dealer. If you are over 14 years of age you may use an air rifle unsupervised with the land owners permission say in a back garden.
it ironic that the gun laws are so stringent in the UK yet gun crime is so rife...especially with hand guns which are a total no no...
Recently bought Sako Black Bear 9.3x62 Rifle JRSB554 from Eurooptic.Priced reasonably at $1695 . If you are looking to hunt bears and boars, go for it. http://goo.gl/i9GLkm
The closest shooting range and rifle club in your area is your best bet. Given the current legal situation surrounding firearms, you may find yourself main idea to rigorous legal scrutiny.
