i witnessed an accident and gave my name and address to the police. I would like to know if I have to give a statement to the police. I dont want to but dont know where I stand with this legally

You can't be forced to give a statement, but why would you not want to help the police?
I would think that any statement has to be given voluntarily,
which should allow you to abstain if you so wish.

The person who caused the crash(car was empty) lives on the same road as me. The person in question had a very bad reputation. I would prefer not to get too involved.
Donna ....This is why I never get involved in things like this.
I used to work in a garage once as a student and I winessed lots of incidents.
Afer a few threats and hassle ...I just used to say
"I Know nothing !"
