I have a very large crop of butternut squash, they are big and the "right" color, but, I have about 5-6 of them that are dark green zucchini colored, why is this, what are they and how do I know when they are ripe?

"Dark Green" a very beautiful dark green
If it's not a daft question when did you plant them and what part of the world do you live in? (county/country will do) - i ask because mine haven't born fruit (and not likely to at this stage in the year i guess!)

I live in the US, Northwest Missouri to be exact. I planted my entire garden around the first of May. Im very proud of it, this being my first garden it turned out very well but I planted WAY too much, so next year I will know better.
How indeed do you know when they are ripe? Mine look bigger than the ones in Tesco but are pale green not golden. Does colour matter?
