I drove to meet a friend in a secluded spot, he wasn't there, I drove back (with another friend). The police came down and round, boxed me in, and told us to get out of the car. They said that we had been spotted leaving the scene of an assault, and someone had contacted the police. They asked to search the vehicle. I let them, but I think I should have refused. Being reported as driving along a road where an assault took place is not probable cause to believe involvement, is it? They were looking for a knife or something, I guess. They got to the boot but it was full so they gave up.

well it does sound a bit iffy, how did you happen to come across another friend at this secluded spot.
Well, under Section 25 you could be in for a good thumping, without the option, and I have to say that if I was the magistrate I would be going for 6 months without the option. However I am not the magistrate and I hope this helps.

I would be more concerned with having a friend who is mistaken for a tramp

spaced, to this day (it's been a while) I have always wondered why they gave up on the boot. The boot was full of bbq equipment and food/drink. My excuse had been that I was going to meet my friend for a bbq (suddenly becomes very plausible when you meet a boot full of firelighters and sausages?).
I went in near darkness to find my friend in a secluded spot, left the car and shouted on him, got back into town where it was student celebration night..............I always figured they thought we were picking up drugs or something.
My real question is........could I just have said 'No, ****** off'. Actually I think my tax may have been slightly out of date, thus my reason for not rubbing them the wrong way.
A 'dogging' excuse did cross my mind :-p
