is it true that once you marry your tax code changes and you may be liable to get a rebate?

No- the married couple's allowance was phased out over a number of years and disappeared at least 5 years ago
The married couple's allowance still exists for those born before 6th April 1935.

You're still in with a chance - only one of the spouses needs to be 72+
