I have just been advised of my original surname (i am male) and have obtained my original birth certificate
I am known by another name and have been for 63 years what are my options to begin using my original surname and what are the legal ramifications
Ie banking etc

You can use any name you like, providing you do not intend to defraud.

You can change your name by useage - start using your 'new name' and inform everyone who needs to know of your change of name, in writing.

You can do it by Deed Poll - a legal document that states that from a certain date you will be known by the different name.

Although not strictly necessary, the Deed Poll does make it easier when dealing with banks, DVLA and the passport authorities. Expect to pay around �40.
