A question posted yesterday about a 24yr old with a mortgage got me thinking that I was his age when I first moved out my parents and got my own place. However it was the late 80's and getting a mortgage and buying property was pretty easy back then. So how old was you when you decided to take the plunge and move out of your parents house and go it alone as a tennent or owner? With rising house prices and difficulties getting onto the property ladder these days are we staying with our parents for longer?

I left home when I was 24 to get married, my wife left home when she was 17, which in the 1960s, was unheard of, but her parents were bloody horrible to her
Hi, mattco! I actually asked a question similar last week: http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Body-and-Soul/Q uestion433036.html

I'm 22 and still love living at home, but I've been asked to move into a lovely house with my two best friends and I'm still struggling to say "yes", LOL! I'll have to 'take the plunge' sooner or later, though...

:o)
I left at about 20, brought the house of an old friend of mine.
3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a wet room.
I ejoy living here though, i was lucky, i know someone who is also a member of answer bank, who still lives at his parents house at the age of 34.
I left home at 19, saddled with a mortgage at 21, lots of unfortunate stuff happened so repossessed at 24, been a tenant ever since!!.

I feel I missed out on the great benefits of living at home and not paying major bills, my brother still lives at home (22) and he is minted!!, I would have moved out later if I could do it again!!!

I left at 18 (just) and had my own mortgage - I almost had to get my parents to sign on my behalf, but entry date was delayed by 2 weeks and was 18 2 days before I had to sign final papers. This was all the way back in 1984.
21 i left home, we bought my parents house for a good price as they wanted to downsize : ) gave us a great start for which i was eternally gratefull for, my daughter and partner have their own house now and my son whos 22 says hes never going to leave ?? wel see....
really crossroads...I know of a few 34 year olds on here
I left home at 11 to go into borstal, sorry school.

But the parents apron strings were firmly cut at 18 when I was on a military sponsorship I guess.

They still however insist on giving me a few quid every now and then and casually slip money in to my pockets!!!!! They really are quite stupid, bless their hearts.
I left at 26, and then returned one year later as a "tenant" and rented the second floor apartment from mom. The apt was empty as it needed work and I needed a place, so it worked well. About 5 years ago (at 32) I bought out my father's half and owned it with mom. Due to her terminal illness, I know am sole owner on paper, but we share mortgage, etc.

I do think people stay at home longer. In New York City (not manhattan) a one bedroom apartment goes for at least $1000. per month plus utilities. Who can afford that if you are just out of college/uni? Somedays I wish I still had my old bedroom back it was much simpler too.....
i bought a house with my boyfriend ( with a joint mortgage) when i was 18 (in 1990) but although I owned the house my parents didnt like the idea of us living together and wanted us to marry. I stayed living at mum and dads for about a year after i bought my own place until they eventually let me move in officially.
i moved out when i met my fiance, which was november 2004 so i was 18, i moved in with him we sold his place and bought a bigger place, we now have 3 bed house
Sorry cazzz but i'm not saying any names because he's my boss's mate.
I left home at 16, I moved in with a friend. I didnt get along with my parents at all and couldn't wait to move out.
I was homeless at age 15, moved into a hostel aged 16, moved in with a mate at 17, moved city at 18 to go to college and rented somewhere, got made homeless again before last exam, got a flat and started uni at 19, made homeless again at 20 for arrears in rent due to tower block being a nesting area for smack heads who tried to get their claws into me, spent 2 weeks on streets then got in another hostel, hostelled it for year and a half. Been in secure employment for government for 2 and a half years and am now renting a beautiful penthouse apartment over 2 floors with a balcony with views of Corstorphine hill and fife in the distance with another 2 part time paid jobs and 4 voluntary jobs I would say I have got my life well and truely sorted out considering at 21 I'd been homeless for 1/6th of my life!
Skreech, you have my respect, annoys me when people think all homeless people are wasters.
wow skreech!! kudos for picking yourself up from that!!!
Left home at 20 , lived in a bed sit and as time went on things improved job wise , rented a flat , then with a struggle bought a house . My friend still has her son living at home he is 30 ,when he puts his mind to it he can earn good money , but gives her nothing .
Cheers guys but I had a lot of help along the way from a lot of really kind people!
left home at 19 and always been a tennant, i've never wanted to own a house, i often feel 'i should' but i really don't want that kind of responsibilty
I left home at 18!! But i came back to live with my parents at 28 whilst i went to uni to study full time. Ive got one year left on my degree!
