Advice re Yamaha FZR750

I have been offered an old FZR 750 in decent condition, with about 30,000 miles on the clock. The guy selling it is a colleague and I trust him - he has told me that it has started burning quite a bit of oil. Is this likely to be something expensive to fix or likely to kill the bike soon? I really only want it for commuting til I can afford something newer. Apart from this and needing new discs and other consumables, it's a pretty tidy bike. Can anyone give me some advice?

assuming it hasn't been overfilled with oil which would make it smoke, it is possible that the oil rings on the pistons are worn letting oil by. i don't know how much parts would cost but if you are going to do the job yourself just make sure you have a haynes manual or something similar to help you if you will only use the bike for a while before getting something else just keep an eye on the oil level and top up when you need to.
