my self employed (registered, pays VAT etc) husband is due to have surgery which means he will be unable to work for at least 6 weeks (possibly up to 10 wks). He is the main breadwinner and without him bringing in a wage our monthly bills will be impossible to meet. I work part time but do not earn a very high wage. Is there any government temporary assistance he can apply for whilst off ill?

You will ned to talk to the DSS, they may be able to help you as you only work part time, he should be entitled to claim sickness benefit, get a certificate from the Drs for this, I believe the benefit is about 50 per week, not a lot I know but worth finding out about, I am self employed and we are really treated like crap when it comes to benefits, might also be worth ring the council to see if you will be entitled to a bit of help towards council tax, but I cannot think of any other thing he might be able to claim for, but check with DSS, good luck, Ray
