i would also like to know this answer i have 9 months left out of an 18 month contract and im getting ripped off but they said im not allowed to cancel unless i write to disconnections and even then i may not be able to cancel, surely this is wrong as i cnt even remember signing anything
You will find you will be able to cancel early but they will charge you.
You will need to buy yourself out of any remaining time you have left. So if you signed up 8 months ago, you will need to pay for the line rental for the remaining in 4 months in order to be free.
As for leighkaty you can change your tariff that your on most if not all have a clause. That you must keep the original tariff for the first 3 months. Then after 3 months you can change to a better tariff you still has to be with the same provider though. But your tariff can be changed to one that's more suitable for you either higher rental or lower.
most providers will charge you for every month left on your contract, whether you signed or not.

My daughter took out a contract for 18 months and the first 6 months were half price. Since it went up to the full price she has lost her job and cannot afford to pay it. She rang them to see if she could cancel and they said that she couldn't. She asked to be put on a cheaper tarrif and they said she couldn't do that until the contract had been running for 12 months! We are trying to find a company that will 'buy' her contract but in the mean time she still can't afford to pay.
kathyan- the carphone warehouse are normally good for buying tariffs i hear
Thanks Hayley. She is going to see them this weekend.
