Yes you can. Try the Alliance and Leicester, but make sure you tell them you are bankrupt. You will get a very basic account. No cheque book, or overdraft. Some other banks will accept bankrupts but you will have to check. Not sure if they offer direct debits but I am sure they bank will tell you
I don't think A & L normally do a/cs for bankrupts. On the FSA list the only ones that do are Nationwide, Co-op & Barclays, but sometimes other banks agree to leave an a/c open.

All such a/cs are basic - no cheque book or overdraft facility, but a cash card & ability for wages to be paid in & to have DDs & SOs. Simplest to open is probably Nationwide. Make sure you tell them you are bankrupt & only want a basic a/c. Best not to open it till the day after the day you become bankrupt - otherwise it will probably get frozen by the Official Receiver.
I'll get shot down in flames over this but I'll tell you anyway.

I owed 40k plus (credit cards, overdraft etc)

I opened a new bank account (Nationwide flex account)

I had to tell my parents because although I didn't live there my mail went there.

Any post I had got returned saying I had moved abroad.

Some 3 1/2 years later I have paid nothing back, am not declared bankrupt and have had no bayliffs arrive at the property.

If you are in a position to do something similar then do it.

I can't get credit at the moment but don't need to.
************* - you will never ever get a mortgage or any other type of credit. even if you did pay it off. it would probably take about 200 years to get you're credit rating back to normal. also the debt written off will be associated with the property you live at
that message for my friend owing 40k above
Wait till the day after you go bankrupt and then open an account at The Co-op bank, its called a Cashminder and you get a Visa Electron card, online banking with facilities for direct debits ect. The Nationwide will open you an account but you just get a basic cash card with that so the Co-op is a better one to open.
If you already have just a basic account the OR may declare he has no interest in it.
