in the laws eyes , ive broken up with mt ex partner we had a house together which we both paid half the bills, if there is no declaration of trust etc , am i entitled to half the house , even if one has spent more doing it up or the the input of money into the initial deposit

Was the house in joint names, did you put any deposit down?
You may have a BENEFICIAL INTEREST (or equitable interest - it is the same thing) that may be recognised in law. This is useful starting point:
