Ground rent.

Have I dreamt this or is it an urban myth- I haven't received a bill for ground rent for many years- probably 10 or more. Does the landlord have the right to claim the arrears at this late stage? I've got the idea in my head that he can't, but could be wrong. Thanks in advance.

I think he can, but he can only claims so many years. how much ground rent is it per year?
Sorry i forgot to mention that it's important for you to check your lease agreement. It will details this in the lease..
I think the time limit for civil debt is 6 years since the last claim was made.

Perhaps I should explain that I don't live in the property any more, + this has only come to light now because I am in the process of making the final payment on my mortgage.
The building society have told me that 10 yrs ground rent is outstanding, which I don't dispute, because it's about 10yrs since I received any request for it! Trouble is, the ground rent is only �3 per annum, + the landlord is asking for over �80, which includes "costs". So what I need to know is what is my position now? I swear I haven't received any requests for payment for 10 years.I shall be phoning them tomorrow, but I would be grateful for any advice before then.

Further to my last post I think that you have been paying the mortgage means you accept liabilty. I might be inclinde to dispute any interest or costs that are added but as the amount is so small it might not be worth arguing about it and it might afftect your credit record.

Thanks everyone for your help. I spoke to them this morning + they've agreed to half their "costs" from �50 to �25, so that's fairy nuff. Cheers, Bathsheba x
