returning goods

i have brought my wife some hair straighteners , on opening the box and unwrapping them she informed me i had brought the wrong ones. when contacting the retailor they told me i cant return them because the box was opened and the seal on the box lid has been broken. they are brand new never been used are they right that i cant return them for the correct ones or get my money back

They do not legally have to give you a refund if the item is not faulty.
You entered into a 'contract to purchase' which has now ended. As long as the goods aren't faulty, there is no obligation whatsoever upon the vendor to exchange the goods or to refund your money. This would apply even if the box had been unopened. (The retailer might choose to offer an exchange or refund but this is entirely at his/her discretion).

If you bought them via internet you can return within 7 days without giving a reason under distant selling regs; otherwise the latter 2 answers are correct.

are you sure in what your saying because it was off the internet and i have phoned them today and they said if i send them back they will not give me my money back nor will they replace them for the ones i want
