When I was at school many years ago (late sixties), I had a history teacher who was full of anecdotes ( now seems to be called "useless information").
He told us that a law was still in place that specified that all road vehicles must carry a nosebag. Apparently, the law went back to the days when only horses/donkeys were the means of pulling carts etc on the road, and some cruel owners forced the animals to travel long distances without food. The law was put on the statute books by the government of the time and was something of a victory for the animal rights campaigners - yes, they were about then too.
He had us all aghast when he told us that, in theory at least, if a police officer searched your car boot and found the nosebag missing, you could be heavily fined or imprisoned!
I've read of some ancient laws being repealed, but I can't say I've heard that this one has, so watch yourselves and get out there and buy that nosebag!

My six year old neice got badly mauled by a rottweiler that was on the loose on the street. My neice almost died, had hundreds of stitches and underwent four years of skin grafting. The only joyful moment that occured was when a police officer visited her parents a couple of days after the incident to say the dog had been put down following a police recommendation in the light of the law.
It's easy to condemn a law until you need its protection yourself.

Further to the above, at the time as a family we were very grateful that the police had recommended that the dog be put down.
We were not at the time nor since, interested if the police went beyond the call of duty in suggesting this course of action; that day, we glimpsed humanity and common-sense surfacing above a much maligned public service often accused of being offhand and lacking sympathy.
The male and female police officers, who we learned later were both parents themselves, were in tears at the sight of my neice.

In some sense sadly a lot of these ridiculous old laws, like madatory archery practice on a Sunday, were repealled quite a few years ago. They do however live on in urban myth.
