i am a train driver, and am currently on my 4th day sick,im going back on monday which will mean ive had 6 days,my company says it requires a doctors note now,but i am under the impression only from 7 days do you need a doctors certificate

I believe you need a doctors note after 5 working days sickness.
For SSP purposes you are right but your employer is entitled to ask for one earlier if he wants.

But if you are going back Monday that sounds like 7 days anyway? It's 7 days, not 7 working days.
Self-certificate after four days of absence, doctors note for the 8th day.

However, the company is entitled to ask for a doctor's note before the eighth day, and if your GP charges for this, you should recover the money from your employer.

If you refuse to provide the requested sick note before the 8th day you will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay only, and not any pay the company normally pays as sick pay.
