What would be the legal consequences for a mother who refused to register her child's birth and demanded minimal state involvement in her child's life? This is hypothetical by the way and i haven't become an anarchist....yet!

The parent will be fined 200 if the birth is not registered within 6 weeks.

If the parent refuses to register the birth, the court will step in and enforce the registration of the birth.

Without a birth certificate, a person will not be able to get a passport, open a bank account, go to school or get married.
No child benefit or other benefits would be payable for that child.
The person would be able to get employment or insurance of any kind. Nor would he be able to get a driving licence.

Here in Jersey there was a recent case of a mother who refused to register her child's birth because local law says that the child must be registered under her surname and not her partner's The child can use his name except in legal situations and it can be changed by deed poll as long as both parents agree, at a later date. The Registrar of Births sent her several warnings and finally registered the birth himself.

I would guess that someone would have to register the birth if the mother refused to act - could be the person caring for the child.
