Speeding - Notice of Intended Prosecution

I have received a Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding. The alleged offence (Camera) took place on 6th August 06 but the letter sent by the Police is dated 24th August 06. Am I right in thinking that I can get off if they don't notify me within 14 days. If so, what do I do now?
