Has anyone ever won a competition where no purchase was necessary by sending their details in rather than buying a product?

That option rarely exists - ie. either buy the product OR send in details. Consumer competitions which end up with a draw HAVE to be 'no purchase necessary' in order not to contravene UK gaming laws. If you demand proof of purchase, you need to have a skill-judged comp (eg. slogan writing).

Most competitions are run for data capture (to get as many consumer names and addresses as possible). Product purchase at that stage is irrelevant to the promoter - they're trying to reach non-purchasers anyway.

A quite separate issue is the awarding of prizes. There is nothing to stop a Chief Exec deciding to award the first prize 'out of the hat' to a favourite contact or even a personal acquaintance - nothing can ever be proved. And believe me, it happens far more than you'd like to think.

Thanks Quizmonkey - it all seems a bit sinister now!!!
Well, I didn't mean to paint too gloomy a picture! But people should realise that companies don't give prizes away just out of generosity. It's your details they're after.

On the 'fiddling the first prize' issue - that probably happens more in business-to-business promotions, where 'lucky clients' end up winning for reasons other than mere chance.
Not sure that is true,

I have won several times and reasonable prizes by sneding details rather than buying the product!
What are you suggesting isn't true???

Thank you Oxcomper, as you have won competitions this way, you have restored my faith
I won a competition once , I brought the product- but a condition of entry was that you could just send in your details - no purchase necessary. When I was talking to the man who run the competition he inform me that they had loads of entries that did not have the tokens and they had dumped them.It appeared he was anaware of the "No purchase necessary" rule..
I won a mini cooper last year through the no-purchase method.the competition was for purchasing men`s suits.
