What is the definition of a hosepipe ban? (apart from the obvious) e.g. if there's a hosepipe ban does that mean you can't wash your car using buckets of water?

Without stating the obvious, you can't use a hosepipe. I'm sure someone even got prosecuted for syphoning their bathwater with a hosepipe to water their garden.

I'm sure you can use buckets to wash the car but you can't fill the bucket with a hose !!!.....then again, i would hope that people would be sensible and not wash their cars if we have a water shortage.

You can, however, use a hosepipe to top up a garden pond.

Check with your local water provider if there's any confusion.
