I read that the Scottish parliament propose to introduce a deposit on these items,I am in favour of this and would welcome a similar scheme in England
does anybody disagree if so why ?

^ Yes a while back the price of scrap Aluminium was so high empty drink cans were worth 1p each, it has dropped now but still worth collecting them. You can buy crushers to get them down to a manageable size. But you need to get 20Kg or so before the scrap man will take them.

it used to be the case here in scotland..2d back on every bottle returned to shop..as kids it was a lucrative hobby searching for bottles discarded...
It would certainly be a incentive for kids to go out litter picking.
Like Minty, this was an important supplement to my very small pocket money as a kid in the 60's.

Battles were fought between boys, over discarded Corona bottles ! Very little, if any plastic around in those days of course, but I can't see why the rest of the UK shouldn't try this out.
Deposits were common when I was a kid, but those in control opted to stop it. Takes ages for common sense to return after some generation opts to change the system for the worse.

Sounds the sort if thing the commercial companies should be into. Seems strange that government should be involved. Oh well... whatever.
I can see it working for glass bottles that can be washed and reused, but plastic bottles and metal cans are just recyclable scrap.Who would store the cans and plastic and pay the deposit back? Or is it just a non refundable surcharge as on plastic carrier bags?
... OF thing ...
>:-(
I remember fight with my brothers over the bottles to give back to the Bonacord man 10p a bottle was a lot of money in the late 70's and 80's.
You are going to have to separate glass, plastic , steel and aluminium as each needs separate treatment. Aluminium is worth a lot more as scrap than steel or glass.
When you're in Canada, you see lots of street people collecting plastic bottles from the trash cans. Obviously, they get some money for them from somewhere. I don't actually know what they do with them.

I think there should be a paid return scheme for glass bottles.
Yes I remember it well. We used to take the Corona bottles back to the shops and the beer bottles or flagons as we called them back to the off licence which was a little window on the side of the pub.
Shedy....my memories exactly !
There is a deposit system here in Germany and it works very well.
Yes it should be brought into the whole of the UK.
I went to Germany as a teenager and I've never dropped litter since. It was so clean.
We went round Tynecastle football ground after the Hearts home games in the late 40s collectng empty beer bottles we got 2 pennies each bottle from the local pubs, happy days

I am very pleased with the replies and can also remember going to the off licence with empty beer bottles and getting money. My son lives in Denmark and takes all his glass bottles to the local super market puts them in a machine that recognises each bottle and dispences coins.
I read in the paper that germany has a deposit of 20p per bottle.
Yes - deposits are a good idea, which should never have been stopped.

I'd also like all take-away packaging to be branded with the company name & the companies then to be charged for the cost of cleaning up the litter.

Our local council have changed rubbish collection to Veiolia and now we have green bin for paper(no shredded paper)brown bin for kitchen waste in a separate plastic bag small square green box for glass bottles, metal drink cans, small square brown box for food waste which must be placed in a separate plastic bag.
Good idea to bring back returnable items. But if we get charged say 20p deposit as Germany does I don't think many adults will be giving their cans etc. to the kids to take back. In our area there is a man who goes out early morning and collects as many cans as he can find .Crushes them and takes them to the local scrapyard.

I'd be happy with a deposit system , not sure how they'd work it for online shoppers but overall a good idea.
