Police shows - anything like reality?

Any police officers in here? Are the TV police shows anything like reality? In one episode of Dalziel & Pascoe, the investigation team had large 8 x 10 photographs of all the suspects, stuck on the wall. They looked as though they had all been taken in the same studio, with the same background, all posed. Which of the shows is most like the real thing and which is the total opposite? I mean, do you guys look at these shows and burst out laughing at things?
