My daughter had this question in an IT exam, could some of you do me a favour and give an answer.

Which of the websites below do you think could be a fake website? Circle the one you think could be fake and give a reason why you think this.

www.freeonlinegames.com
www.playgamesallday.net
www.freegames.org

Thanks for any answers.

P.s., we chose the .org because we thought that indicated a public body/charity etc.

Sorry, forgot to add that we got the answer wrong, teacher didn't give correct answer.
lord knows, but org isn't usually the name for commercial games sites, is it?
Rocky, I believe .com and .net are now used universally for general purposes.
.org is for non-commercial, non-profit organisations.

If I'm right, it must be the fake one.
I've no idea but I'd have picked the .net one, I don't think a website could have just net as its address.
Question Author
That's what we think but she got it wrong. She needs to see the teacher I think.
Question Author
There's a few .net ones out there Prudie.

It's a bit of a quandry alright.

Thanks all for your answers. :)
yes sorry should have searched before I answered, I'd have got it wrong too!
.com derives from commercial; therefore it's unlikely to provide free games.
The domain name com is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) in the Domain Name System of the Internet. Its name is derived from commercial, indicating its original intended purpose for networks of general commercial character.
www.playgamesallday.net

It's the only one that does not open a page when Googled.

Frugalfred, thanks for answering, there actually is a website with free games.

http://www.freegames.com/

Could be fake I suppose, can't check properly as I'm on the iPad and they seem to use Flash. I think they are a commercial venture though as they have adverts.
Question Author
Thanks Ron, but she didn't have access to a computer to check. She could only go on the info in the question.
> P.s., we chose the .org because we thought that indicated a public body/charity etc.

No, .org can be bought by anybody, as can .com and .net

Maybe this is a "trick" question to check whether you understand that.

The truth is that simply by looking at those three domain names, you can't tell whether any of them are fake.
Question Author
Thanks for answering Ellipsis, I didn't know that about .org. You may well be right about the trick question bit, I just really wish teachers would tell kids where they went wrong, how else are they supposed to learn?

Thanks again all :)

I think the answer is all of them could be fake.
> Which of the websites below do you think could be a fake website? Circle the one you think could be fake and give a reason why you think this.

None, any or all of them could be fake. No one of those domains is any more or less likely to be fake than any of the others.

com, net and org domains are all freely available and often used by organisations whose purpose does not match the implied criteria for those Top Level Domains. This is especially true of net and org when the com is not available.

Thanks, I'll let her know, I have told her she must ask her teacher what the correct answer is.

Happy days ;)

Thanks again.
