Does the owner of a property have the same right to remove tree roots from a neighbouring house as he would have with overhanging branches?

Thanks for that link, CF. Useful.
It is much better to ask the owner of the tree to deal with the problem and provide the facilities to deal with the roots, if they do not or refuse to deal with the roots you can engage contractors or deal with the roots yourself . You can cut them back to your boundary but take care not to damage the tree.

And if it does damage the tree, what then?

Perhaps I should explain that this large tree root makes it impossible for anyone to get a vehicle off the road. But its removal could possibly kill the tree.
