Do you agree with the sacking ?
Question Author
Yes. He is a man with a long history of thuggery who should never have been reinstated after he resigned to avoid disciplinary proceedings.
I quite agree sandy.
I'm going to go out on a limb a bit here and play devil's advocate (not the terrible Keanu Reeves film)...

Looking at the footage of the incident, despite this officer's record...doesn't part of you think there's an element of bad luck in this story?

I mean, if he had violently pushed him to the ground and given him an almighty kick in the stomach, causing internal bleeding, then I would think "serves you right".

But the assault itself isn't that aggressive. I've seen worse done in a bar room brawl.

I'm not in any way excusing this copper's behaviour, but in virtually every other situation, pushing someone over will result in nothing more than a £2 dry cleaning bill...
Question Author
Bad luck clearly played a part. Harwood must think he was very unlucky that there was a camera to record his violence.
I'm a bit surprised at this outcome as usually the police really do look out for their own.

I can't help wondering if there is some connection with the recent revelations about the police concerning Hillsborough and Harwood is a handy sacrificial victim to show the public that the police do take misconduct seriously.

And yes, I know it's different police forces involved and very different circumstances, but it's just a thought.
sp1814 - from the footage I viewed, the PC clearly pushed his truncheon endways into the back of Mr Tomlinson. The stance of the PC showed he was leaning and applying force.

I know no more than what I saw. Equally I have my own views about the incident and do not personally agree with the court findings. But we have to abide by them.
With no imprisonment to face and his widely reported smiling picture, no doubt Harwood will reflect that one 'manslaughter' is another man's laughter.
good, what else is there.
Excellent Sir Prize!
At least he should lose his pension now and not come out with £'s compensation for retiring under ill health!!
He gets to keep his pension.
Kerosene - your thread wasn't about him being sacked.
chapatzu,

It was difficult for my post to comment on his sacking given that I posted it late this morning as the disciplinary hearing was getting underway. Clearly it has now been completed with news of Harwood's sacking.

Sorry if my post didn't contain the crystal ball needed to predict the outcome this afternoon. I'll try to do better in future.
Kerosene - I am sure there are a number of people who would like to show you what to do with a crystal ball. Just because you started a thread during the morning, does not exclude anyone else voicing their views later in the day.

What is your point - but more importantly what is your mission?

To answer your impertinent question - no, one is not enough.
Ha ha sir.prize - good points, especially about the crystal ball !!
If a member of the public had assaulted a person and caused actual bodily harm resulting in that person's death then it would be a case of manslaughter. However since it is not criminal offence for a policeman to assault an innocent person he cannot be found guilty of manslaughter. Does that sound rght?
sir.prize,

"impertinent" ? Gosh, that does make me feel young! Being reprimanded by teacher? Heading to the corner now, sir! Promise not to come out until you say so? If you ever do, of course?

PS: Still searching for the crystal ball, and bending over as soon as I do for
you to indulge your fantasy for me...sweetcheeks?

In fact, I'd tug the forelock in due submission - if I had one.
You'd have more than a soreknee!
"Kerosene - I am sure there are a number of people who would like to show you what to do with a crystal ball. Just because you started a thread during the morning, does not exclude anyone else voicing their views later in the day. "

Sir.prize a position strangely converse to the one you took with me on an earlier thread.

Silly me, I forgot that you're ignoring me.
