If an employee makes decisions in October based upon paperwork and application forms supplied by his employer, can that employer then say It was the wrong informaton, the rules changed at the end of last year, thus losing the employee £500. It concerns paternity leave, hence the decision was taken last October, and the leave was taken in January.

Sounds confusing, but if the employee was entitled to a certain amount of paternity leave which has now been reduced then the employer should have gone through a processs of changing the contract. This would involve notifying all employees and would have given time to plan for the change.

If the pat leave is statutory minimum then it hasn't reduced so no change should be expected. If you need advice I'd suggest you call ACAS. They have a good support line for employees with queries about their rights.

could you be a bit more specific about things?
I think you will find there were changes to statutory paternity pay which applied from April 2011, not December 2011. If your employer has caused the loss of £500 by providing incorrect information you can follow your employer’s grievance procedure.
I'm fairly confident that Stat Pat Pay is still 2 weeks, but Stat Pat Leave (unpaid) was increased last year.

Company Pat pay/leave can be more but as tony says, if an employee has been given wrong info then make a complaint in writing and contact ACAS for support.
