I got CCJ's etc when i was 20 and now 26 find i cant get a mortgage and wont be able to do so for roughly another 4 years unless i come up with a 10% deposit. If I change my name by deed poll does that wipe out my credit history or does it follow me on.

It follows you matey, as once you notify your bank/building society/whoever you have changed your name then the Credit ref agencies automatically get notified too. I know this as my husband took my name at marriage, subsequently he became bankrupt and after applying for his credit file all the changes etc (name, defaults) show up. But you'll be amazed that somethings you thought will show up - do not!  It depends how good the lender is at notifying the Agencies.

cheers spammylou your a star.
If you request (for a fee) a copy of your credit history from Equifax, Experian or whomever it will show that they record all names you have gone under and all bad debt linked to your current address for which the previous owners may be liable but will count against you unless you have it removed.

As I am aware it doesn't show up bad debts against an address for everyone, as that would be sharing data protected info to others - You just get the info on yourself. If this was the case everyone would find it very hard to get credit i think. On his report, it just details him, past addresses (for last 5 years) and any bad debts, i.e defaults etc.  I know I had maybe one bad debt but nothing came up for me or anyone else at a our old address, or this one. just my husband.

Kempie - I'm afraid that the address thing is not the case, and is in fact illegal to add such information in relation to an address or another person for a year now.

sug, why do you say another 4 years - after six years, these references are wiped fromyour credit file and cannot affect you in any way - the only bad thing about your credit file then is that there is no credit on it to check your worthiness - Here's a couple of tricks for you that are perfectly legal and might assist you in some way
1) Mutual Societies - although they credit check, do not usually credit score and tale every case on its own merits - you won't automatically get turned down
2) Most credit score, and this is an automatic process - attach a 'notice of correction' as an explanation to your file - this is flagged up by the computer when the lender processes your application, and a person has to read and make the decision on it.
3) If you make an application to get a CCJ 'set aside' for whatever reason i.e. you did not receive it, it was not you, you were unable to defend the claim e.t.c. - if this is then removed, which is very likely, although at the court's discresion, and you must show that you made your application in reasonable time (from notice) this the has to come off your file for the time being, so you can then apply for whatever credit you require. Note that you are then still in the position of being taken to court again, and could still lose.
Good luck
