is it legal for a car dealer to simply park cars at the side of the road in various places with adverts in to sell them? I'm brassed off with one guy parking cars outside my house with A4 sheets of paper advertising them for sale.

Single car sales at the roadside aren't banned under the legislation I referred to above but, where certain laybys, verges, etc are regularly being used for such sales, the council can make an order prohibiting any sales at that location..

No, sorry I'm in the UK
contact your local council - asking about trading from a private adressess
How many cars are there at any one time?

Section 3 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 states:
"A person is guilty of an offence if at any time—(a) he leaves two or more motor vehicles parked within 500 metres of each other on a road or roads where they are exposed or advertised for sale, or (b) he causes two or more motor vehicles to be so left".

The maximum penalty is £2500. Offences should be reported to the Trading Standards Department of your county council (or metropolitan council/unitary council, as appropriate for your area).

good point its always just one
We don't use the words "advert", "brassed", and I have no idea what an "A4" is. That and dealers don't leave cars off the lots. They even block the lots off so you can't drive through at night and look.
A4 is a size of paper, almost the same size as your letter paper.

Thank you Chris - by the way, am I not allowed to use the words brassed or advert ? I dont understand the cowtipper at all
...that prohibition possibly being made under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982...

If a few of these cars were keyed the dealer might look for somewhere else to sell his motors
Not sure what cowtipper's points are, koiman, but he's in the US, I certainly know what you mean.
koiman, cowtipper was referring to the first post, asking if you are in the USA. Cowtipper is American and he was just pointing out that the wording of the question wouldn't fit with American English.
Cowtipper is commenting on his own lack of understanding of those "British" terms.
Sorry about that, I'll try to use quotes. I just like seeing my Avatar so I respond to things I have no business in.
