A solicitor employed by a firm of solicitors, and who had been acting for me has left his firm
of solicitors. The only notification that I received was a phone call from him to say that he was taking voluntary redundancy an was leaving the office in about half an hour.

This is now into the third week and I have not heard anything from tghe firm of solicitors, and my case would seem to be out on limbo.

Please advise what notification I should have received, and where do I go from here ?.

They should be updating you but have you spoken to the firm to ask what's happening
I would just write to them and ask who`s taking over the case
well my most sensible answer of where you can go from here is to simply ask the firm what is happening!
Why didn't you ask the solicitor when he rang you?
TBH i can't see why you are berating them for not contacting you when you have not contacted them
