We've got something up in the loft. a few droppings - about the size of sunflower seeds - so not mice, is it likely to be squirrels. Can't imagine a rat shinning up a drainpipe. No signs of anything chewed or gnawed so far. so I guess next stop is putting down some traps?

rats will get in we had them in the loft a few years ago couldnt find where they got in ,once we got rid of them thankfully they have not come back
Rats definitely. And they get into roofs. We have problems most years (we live rurally near a farm and rats will always be a problem). You would be surprised how easy is is for rats to climb up walls, they are very clever little blighters.
Rats will climb anything that has a rough suface.
I have a pest living in the loft.
Fortunately he is away at university most of the time.
if not rats could be bats, watch for them coming out at dusk
Bat droppings look completely different though.
And stink more.
Could be a Glis glis.My friend had one in his loft a couple of years ago.
