my stepson has had an operation to repair a compund fracture of the leg. he is claiming incapacity benefits. the consultant gave him a sick cert for six weeks. the consultant did say however that he would probably be unable to fully weight bear till around the end of year (his work is veryphysical). so the Q's i ask are:
when does he send another sick note in (which he can get from his GP)?
will they stop it without a further sick note?
will they write to him to advise him that he needs to submit another sick cert?

Your stepson needs to send in sick notes, otherwise it is unauthorised absence. He shouldn't wait for reminders from his employer. But if in any doubt he's better off asking his employer rather than taking advice from people like me on Answerbank.
I am in a simialr situation right now. You will have to contact your G.P or visit them and keep requesting sick notes (unless you visit which might help extend the notes longer).. They will send you reminders for the sick notes when they need to be resent. I am having to do this every two weeks - which is a pain seeing as I can't actually get to the G.P, I am having to rely on friends/partner to pick up said notes for me =(. Hope he feels better soon, painful stuff. Also its probably best keeping in touch with his work also, explaining the situation and what there policy for it all is - it can be a minefield, mine has been going on for over a year also.
