I'm sure I've been told that if a company is going to charge you any fees or commission, these should be stated upfront and before any charges are taken. Can anyone tell me if this is true, and if so, where I can find the law that governs this?

I was told I was paying a 10% holding deposit against a purchase, only to find later that this payment was a fee from a 3rd party to introduce me to the seller, and they had therefore added their fee to what they had told me was the purchase price. Have they also broken the law by telling me a purchase price that was inflated because they had their fee hidden within it?
Thanks
James
