Hi Barmaid - your name was suggested as a possible source of help.... Last year I was prosecuted for benefit fraud from my local authority which I won, however their case was very flawed and I ultimately lost my job and a large sum of money not submitting to the bullies....The authority are waiting for our compensation claim and have their insurance company ready - they will only deal with a lawyer. We cannot afford a lawyer and haven't had any success with no win no fee so the only alternative is to represent ourselves. We have heaps of good evidence + witnesses and just need advice on presenting this so we don't get slaughtered and of course to set the compensation fee. Any ideas? I particularly need to know how to find out previous similar cases. I have time on my hands but want to make my intentions known to the authority as we have lost a lot of time already with a rogue solicitor.

I've been down that route, they are happy to give a list of local solicitors but their duty solicitor isn't specialist enough. I've been to the Law Society, I've been through the list of lawyers, I had one lawyer who took the case on and did nothing for 6 months, I've approached other lawyers but in this economic climate they are nnot happy with no win no fee cases. So we need to do it ourselves or find another lawyers, meanwhile time is ticking on and we need to move otherwise the Local Authority gets away with it (having spent thousands of pounds of ratepayers money as well). Hence my request! I don't want to be made into mincemeat at court and I don't want to waste their time either. :-)
Since you're confident of winning pass the info to a good solicitor, who will add his charges to your claim, and fight harder & more efficiently than you ever could.

I have tried approaching solicitors but they do not want to work withtou being paid a minimum of 3k upfront and then we would have to pay for counsel, we are lookin at possibly 10k before a letter has been sent - good case or no, their time is money and yes they can claim their charges but they don't work for nothing. I have tried but we dont' have the money to pay upfront. I just need to know how I do this without a solicitor as is my right!

Thank you for trying by the way! :-)

Someone suggested checking household insurance for legal assistance - we have paid this on our premium but I am not sure whether it covers this sort of incident. A positive thought anyway!
