I am a pet lover and I am a dog owner and I would advise that dogs should never be trusted with a baby.
A baby smells different to what the dog knows as a human and it also makes animal like noises, the dog's reations to a baby can never be reliably predicted.
Use common sense and never ever leave a baby and a dog together unsupervised. That is how tragedies happen.
I had to re-home my previous dog after my then 2 year old jolted him awake and he bit her.
As lovely as a dog is, it's still just that- a dog, and if they get startled or accidently hurt (ears pulled etc) they can react in the worst possible way.
It's a bit like saying "My child can do no wrong", thinking that their wonderful pet can do no wrong. You never know. If the child suddenly squealed or lashed out with a hand or threw something at the dog, then the dog would defend itself and might go for the child. This seems to be a potentially dangerous game.
