Is there a law on what time builders can start work? There is a huge major building site at the bottom of my garden and I mean so close that when the machinery is there you could almost reach over the fence and touch it! At first they were digging holes in the ground that rattled our house, then came the demolition of buildings very close to our house and now it is just general digging etc that is extremely noisy and this starts at 7.05am. I didn't think they were allowed to start this early or I hope they aren't because I am going to have words! Do any of you know any different?

look at the planning conditions online, by going to your local council website and finding the permissions for that project. I dont know for sure, but i think its usually 7 am
It will be quicker to telephone your local council and complain. They don't mind sending someone round to asses what nuisance if any is being committed. You may be entitled to comprensation from the builder if you can put up with it for a few weeks
As per Bednobs response. It is often either 0700 or 0730. However it will also invariably include Saturday morning as well. Ideas about compensation is just cloud cuckoo-land.
In Islington it is 8am:

Builders are only allowed to make construction noise between 0800 to 1800 weekdays and 0900 to 1300 Saturdays. No noisy working is permitted Sundays and Bank Holidays

And in Reigate:
Monday to Friday: 8am-6pm
Saturday: 9am-1pm

With no working on Sundays or Public Holidays.

Every council I have looked at state 8am start - indeed this is the case where I live.

Get on to your council.

Hi Tigwig, the law regarding disturbing the peace is generally 7am, so therefore if they turn up at 6.30 then you will have a leg to stand on when complaining,if not i dont think you will. The other end of the scale is midnight,if someone next door happens to be having a party!! As someone has previously stated there are legal issues regarding noise restriction and the council are the ppl to speak to regarding this. Sorry i couldnt be of more help.
