using the motorola A835 as a modem

I was wondering if it is possible to use the motorola A835 as a Modem with a laptop going through the infrared port. My laptop connects to the phone via the infrared port but only sees the phone as another computer not as a phone and will not dial out through it. Yet I have used other mobile phones through the infrared port and have connected straightaway. Any ideas?

I was stunned when the guy at support centre told me that this phone is not "network unabled" to be used that way?!?! (or may be different way around). I will not give up so easily though. This is 21 century and it is unbelivable that we need to use crack and hacks for such a basic tasks. I will keep you updated.
