It is usually, as Clanad says 1000. However the original definition of a Billion was 1,000,000,000,000. The US version is now mostly used, as a point of interest the correct term for 1,000,000,000 is a Milliard.

A British billion is a million million an American billion is one thousand million.

Indeed, the US version is now widely used everywhere in the UK. Including the news and all physics questions i've come across.
