Rover 216 Wiper- delayed reaction

When I turn on the wipers on my Rover 216 Cabrio theres a delay of several seconds (10 +) before they start working.

Holding down the stem in Wash mode they work straight away.

Once they start they work fine. Fast wipe seems to take longest to work. Also the delay seems to get better if they have been recently used.

Any ideas as I expect this will be a MOT failure.

I have exactly the same problem with my Discovery and it is getting worse. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but I suspect it may be a connection or a computer unit. If you are going for an Mot then you either need to get it fixed or keep them on before you get there but the fact that they do actually work shouldn't fail it.
Most likely the washer relay. The washer/wipe runs on a different circuit to the rest so try replacing the relay first (they're pretty cheap).
doh, wiper (wash/wipe) relay that should read!
