Mother-in-law has been watering plant in metal container on window sill, which has left a rust ring in the paint. Any suggestions gratefully accepted please as to how to get rid

Gentle rub with brillo pad or toothpaste comes to mind. Hope it helps.

What is the windowsill made from or coated with?

If stone a light rub over with a wire brush might lift it, if painted then a nylon kitchen scoured may be the answer.

Try a weak acid (lemon juice or vinegar) - it should dissolve the rust easily.
