I am currently renting a flat and took out a 6 month tenancy agreement on Jan 17th I understand I will be contacted in May, 2 months prior to the end of the tenancy, is there any provision in the assured tenacy conditions that I can ask for a month by month agreement as I want to look for another more suitable flat ?

surely you have the signed agreement with you? If you read it, it should tell you what rights you have to extend the tenancy

Also maybe worth calling your landlord, even if its not in the agreement he may allow it, if youve been a good tenant etc

most tenancy's roll from one month to the next after the initial trial period, I would have a look in your agreement, these sorts of tenancy's require a months notice to leave, or a months notice from the landlord to leave.

Thanks to both of you for your reply's I have got a 6 month tenancy and the contract agreement ends on the 17th July so will have another good look at the small print. As from july I just want a month by month agreement as I am looking for another more suitable flat
I presume you have a six month AST with a two month notice period, so if your landlord wants you to leave at the end of the six month period he would have to serve notice on you two months before. If you hear nothing, it becomes a statutory periodic tenancy, continuing on the same terms but on a month-by-month basis.
