Teaching Jobs

Possibly one of the most rewarding jobs you could ever wish to do, teaching gives you the opportunity to help children and young adults learn and grow, shaping their lives forever.

There are many areas of teaching that you can step into, but the main focus for many people is to teach a certain age group. Many would prefer to teach primary school children and some may be brave enough for secondary school teaching. Whichever area you want to go into, there are many jobs for each age group, such as a classroom assistant, who helps prepare the classroom before each lesson with workbooks and equipment.

Those leaving university can get a government grant to help them train to become a teacher, and a number of other schemes provide accommodation and transport costs to get you to school every morning.

Those who wish to teach at secondary school level should be aware that their degree choice has a great bearing when applying for a teaching job. If your degree is in English, for example, getting a job as a Maths teacher may be difficult, so ensure to focus your attention on your area of expertise.

Teachers need to be organised, flexible and enthusiastic about their work as their attitude rubs off on their colleagues and students alike. If you’re enthusiastic about what you do then those learning from you will be enthusiastic also, resulting in a happy and successful classroom. A good sense of humour, calm nature and strong work ethic will always stand you in goo stead when applying for a teacher’s job.

In terms of salary, Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) can earn over £20,000 per year, but this can vary depending on experience and location of your school. Career progression as a teacher can often take time, but there are plenty of opportunities to advance to positions like head of year and subject heads, all the way up to deputy head and headmaster. With a host of training courses you will always find that you’re retinue is expanding, allowing you to apply for other teaching jobs that may be outside of your area of expertise.
