Prudie- they don't, they say FORMULAS (and of course they usually write it as FORMULA'S because they almost always add a superfluous apostrophe to any plural).
I'm not sure what they think the plural of AXIS is, though. Maybe Axises.

One of my current teachers is young though although he's 26 but wears tweed?!?! and today told us how he used to be in a heavy metal band which conjured a wierd imagine in my head! he spells it formulas but almost all of my other teachers that i can remember spell it formulae.
Question Author

Question Author
No prudie, but he does have a bit of a beard and he lsitens to a weird range of music include 80s/90s brit pop and japanese instrumental stuff!
... and that's wrong?
80s/90s Brit pop isn't exactly weird
Question Author
the range is weird; brit pop, isntrumental japanese stuff, a bit of heavy metal and god knows what else.
Thanks Bueno. Will enjoy reading through that when I have the time.
oh go on then ....OCTOPODES
According to Wikipedia:
"Fowler's Modern English Usage states that "the only acceptable plural in English is octopuses," and that octopi is misconceived and octopodes pedantic."
octopuses, syllabuses and axes
Yes, I prefer SYLLABUSES to SYLLABI as the word syllabus is Greek (rather than Latin)
Octopi is obviously wrong because octopus is a word derived from Greek, not Latin...

What about cherubs, seraphs and kibbutzes? Cherubim and seraphim are correct, and sound correct too because "cherubim and seraphim" is a well-known religious phrase, but kibbutzim...?
Quite, teach.
: )
B**ger the plurals, Mollykins used "gotten"!
Yes, she does use gotten- but so did Shakespeare. . The phrase "ill-gotten gains" is often used and I'm not aware anyone disapproves of it.
Question Author
Dang, i thought I had gotten away with it! :P
