Paramedics are ambulance men first, then they recieve extra training in resuscitation, cannulation, using defibulators, giving drugs etc, so that they can begin treatment in the ambulance before the patient gets to hospital. I know this because I used to train them!
but thats not how you spell defibrillator!
LOL @ Ambulancemen

We've not been called that for a good 20 years!

In order of clinical ability (basic to advanced):
Ambulance Healthcare Assistant
Emergency Care Assistant/Emergency Care Support Worker (spits)
Intermediate/Urgent Tier Healthcare Assistant
Emergency Medical Technician
Paramedic
Emergency Care Practitioner
