Time between starting a job and asking them to be your reference

I have just started doing some voluntary work for my local British Red Cross shop. What I'm wondering is, how long would be a reasonable time frame before asking them for a reference?
I haven't actually found a full time/permanent job yet but I am looking. Still I don't want to put them down as a reference after only 2 shifts! So I am wondering how long I should wait before asking if it is okay to do so.

A reference that relates to employment of less than 6 months duration is pretty limited anyway.
Just don't say anything about it to the Red Cross - for now.
Some new job application forms demand that one enters the current employment as one of the references. If that is what you are concerned about, either enter the Red Cross in this box and add 'temporary job since April 2010' next to it, or just ignore the employment altogether and enter your previous employment.
