I took on a 6 mth contract ( i am self emp) which expired on 11 May 07. I have continued on with a mutual understanding of until November if we both can do so. Nothing in writing. I want to leave now and so would 1 week notice be acceptable?

Legally, yes. If you want a good reference from them, perhaps best to approach it on the basis of 'I would like to leave shortly - what is the soonest date you would prefer me to leave', and negotiate down from that time.
