I work in a supermarket and have just been searched on my way out of the building by a member of the opposite sex. Is this allowed or does it have to be a same sex search???

Absolutely has to be same sex. In theory, you can give permission for a member of the opposite sex to carry out a bag-search, but for anything else, it has to be same sex.
i have worked in a supermarket for years, and searched many times. I am usually asked to empty my handbag and all my pockets. Never at anytime has anyone phyically touched me. If the security person is a man, then there is always a woman member of staff present.
I am usually asked if I also want a personal representative of my choice with me during the search. I also have to sign a form saying I have agreed to be searched.
The searches are random, and no one takes them personally.
If you were physically searched,eg patted down, then you have been assaulted. See a lawyer.
A member of the opposite sex may search your bag/locker etc.
