I already posted this in Jobs and Education but its dead in there and i need an answer. I'm 21 and i wanted to know what qualifications you need to be entered as a mature student at university. I really want to study Midwifery but have no Gcse's (i'm retaking them in September) and only have a BTEC first diploma in Travel and Tourism (which is no use to anyone) Can anyone help?

All universities have different policies for admitting mature students - it might be best to talk to the uni(s) you were thinking of attending first.

Best of luck!
you should also speak to your local adult education college as they will provide u with the courses you will need to get into the Foundation course at Uni, or contact a University Hospital, there is one in Preston, and I think cardiff, there are probably loads.

don't know much about midwifery but found this

dunno if it helps xXx

im 32 and hoping to go to uni to study mental health nursing to get in to uni i had two choices i could take a levels at college this would take a year or do proof of evidence i decide on the latter, i could do this because i study at home, this involves doing two portfolios on english and maths you may be able to do this as you have your btec because this shows you can study to a certain level. it would be worth phoning the uni and asking if you can do proof of evidence. good luck x
Unless you have the requisite A Level points or equivalent (and UCAS should be able to tell you what these are) then many universities will accept you with a pass from a relevant, recognised Access course.

As nect4r says, all the universties have their own criteria, but the newer ones and the old polytechnics are a lot more flexible - hence you're more likely to find a higher percentage of mature students on their courses..

We have an older uni in Leicester, as well an ex-poly. I went to the latter, and several mature colleagues there said they'd turned down the other one in favour of it, because they didn't like the snotty attitudes the other place.

i would give the college you plan on attending a call or email and speak to the guidance support, t hey will point you in the right direction.

sorry couldnt be anymore help

go for an access to Higher Education Course, they inlude units in english and maths

you need to be older than 21 for a start!!

you will not be classed as a mature student at 21!

No, joko. Glammapus is right.

Anyone entering university for the first time at the age of 21 is classed as a 'mature' student (at least by the institution for which I work)

evidence, and quick plug:

There is a system universities use called 'accreditation of prior learning' to determine the suitability of mature students. So you might find it useful to do a Google search on this.

Otherwise I can just confirm what others have said. For midwifery, you will probably need to have done an Access course in a science/health-related subject.

But, yes, don't be afraid to contact universities and ask them their policy.
