Starting a cleaning business

A friend of mine was thinking of starting a cleaning business. Assuming all the cleaners were paid as self employed people and therefore responsible for their own tax returns. What kind of insurance would my friend need in order that any cleaners he employed were covered to work in other people homes. Everything we do today attracts such a raft of paperwork, I think he just wants to decide whether the local demand for cleaners is worth the aggro in setting up a little company.
Thanks.

At least, Public Liability & Employer's Liability

Also:
Check with the local Revenue about IR35 (self-employed people who only work for 1 employer mostly are not classed as self-employed and come under the PAYE system).

Yup, EL & PL essential and never mind the tribunal, Revenue or DWP or used to be DSS Contributions Office/Inspectorate will state quite clearly they were employed and as such the pay you made was net of tax and NHI deductions and if over certain levels you will also be responsible for NIC (employers tax on employing someone).

So the girls hired will all be great, on benefits and wanting cash in hand - yipee - when one gets the sack for not turning up, or nicking from the site she is supposed to clean, and they will, she'll get the arse and blow her whistle, for spite, straight to the dole, benefits and tax offices - why? Becaus ethat is the way it works!

Mail me back in a couple of years when it has happened? Okay?

Best bet is play a straight bat, get a P46 signed by them from day one - it is thier declaration to you and authorities, lets you off a lot of hooks, get one signed every year 5th April - no form, no wages!

Doesn't matter where you are, stick an extra 1 per hour on the rate you charge, most folks are just glad to get a cleaner that is reliable and so will pay. London 2 extra and Home Counties 3 - if you get resistance to price they were always going to be a problem anyway so get different customers, just look more often, knock the door when you leaflet drop!
