but I don't know enough about it.  I've googled it loads and seen the relevant websites, and I have a good idea of what it's about - but is there anyone reading this who is one or knows someone who is who could tell me what it is like?  Thanks!

Please accept my aplogies if I'm wasting your time but I was wondering whether 'the relevant websites' included these ones? :
http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/nhs-knowledge_base/data/490 6.html

http://www.cot.org.uk/newpublic/otasacareer/intro.php

(In particular, check out the discussion forum from the second link. It's specifically aimed at dealing with queries from people seeking information on careers in occupational therapy).

Apologies again if you've already found these sites,

Chris

no you're not wasting my time, its very kind of you to respond - but yes I had seen both of those & discussion forum.  I thought it would be useful to see if there was an AB user who could give me some thoughts on it.  Its a big leap to change career and I guess I'm looking for as much info/personal thoughts as poss before I make the leap!

Thanks

Hi there, I too have been thinking about this career move, but I cannot afford to study as I have a mortgage and am on my own. It is a worthwhile job but needs a big commitment  with studying.  However, I have looked into alternatives and Local Councils run something called Careline or an equivilent and this is a similar role.  It involves assessing people for the appropriate care package, encouraging them to stay at home and have all the emergency cover needed ie:  Red pull cords, and pendants or watches in case of a fall or some other emergency.  This you do not have to have a qualification such as those for OC's, but you are encouraged to take NVQ's which can't be a bad thing.  I am being made redundant next year but not until at least April/May time so it is something for me to think about.  Just thought I would share this with you.  All the best.

that's really useful I'd not heard of Careline - I'll look in to it too, as the cost of studying again in my 30's is worrying me.

cheers
