I saw an ad in the newspaper job section for a 'fish frier', the salary was �26 000p/a is that possible?

Depends on the area. It could also be a managerial job. There are more skills required than at first seems. Also look at the prices these shops charge and look at how many people come through their doors. A vast majority of the items are just bought in - Little manufacturing, so I'm not surprised to see that wage.

Also remember the antisocial hours.
